The value of a gem

Gemstones are viewed as very prestigious objects in many, if not most, cultures, whether they are collectible specimens, used in everyday jewelry, or included in stunning works of art. The highest possible level of material quality, aesthetic beauty, and skilled craftsmanship can be found in fine gems, despite the possibility that their value is entirely artificial. A little bit differently than diamonds, other stones are graded and valued. Although diamonds can also be colored, the fundamental ideas behind "colored stones" still apply to non-diamond gems.

What are the Gem Qualities?

Four factors determine the value of all gemstones. Color, clarity, cut, and carat are some of these elements. Their rarity should be considered in addition to this. This implies that a weight increase for some stones may result in a disproportionately large price increase. A gemstone's price may increase by a factor of four or five, for instance, if its weight is doubled.

Carat

A carat, or one-fifth of a gram, is a unit of weight used to describe gemstones. It is important to distinguish this from karat, a measurement of the amount of gold in an alloy of gold. While 18-karat gold is 3/4 gold and 1/4 another metal, frequently copper, 24-karat gold is pure gold.

Clarity

Clarity is the absence of inclusions, or foreign material like other minerals, hollows, or crystals, in the stone. Value is determined by how the outcome affects the stone's beauty. Certain kinds of inclusions are also preferred, though a lack of inclusions is valuable.

Cut

The technical excellence and the brilliance of a gemstone's cut are used to assign grades. The points of triangular facets may meet without overlapping, or the parallelism of the sides of rectangular step-cut facets may be taken into account.

Color

The purity and intensity of a gemstone's color are typically what determine its value. Nevertheless, in some instances, it might be because a certain color is hard to find. Natural red or blue diamonds, for instance, are extremely expensive.

Rarity

Value is directly impacted by rarity. Because rubies are much rarer than equivalent garnets, they will never be valued at the same level. Due to their chemistry, some stones typically only come in small sizes. Larger stones are even more uncommon in this situation.
